BATON ROUGE, LA - The Louisiana Clinical and Translational Science (LA CaTS) Center, a statewide initiative funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), recently awarded the prestigious Roadmap Scholar distinction to three early career Louisiana scientists and the Meritorious Scholar distinction to a post-doctoral scientist.

SHREVEPORT, LA (KMSS) - Top research scientists from throughout Louisiana will have an opportunity to meet, exchange ideas and mentor up-and-coming researchers at a unique collaborative event Wednesday on the health sciences campus of LSU Health Shreveport. The first-ever LA CaTS Day is an initiative of the Louisiana Clinical and Translational Science (LA CaTS) Center, which was created to harnesses innovation and expertise from Louisiana’s eight academic institutions. The goal is to facilitate research which could prevent chronic disease and improve healthcare in underserved populations in the state.

LSU Health Shreveport hosts top scientists from across Louisiana

Top research scientists from across Louisiana met at LSU Health Shreveport Wednesday to work on improving collaboration across their institutions. They're doing it with the help of LA CaTS, the Louisiana Clinical and Translational Science Center in Baton Rouge. It's funded by a five-year, $20 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. The aim is to promote more unified research. Dr. William Cefalu, executive director of Pennington Biomedical Research Center where LA CaTS is based, led the conference.

LSU ICON Announces Third Round of Pilot Project Funding

LSU ICON is pleased to announce that funding has been secured for the third round of pilot projects. LSU ICON is available to fund up to 10 pilot project awards, depending on the quality of the project applications and relevance to the priorities of LSU ICON. Each award may be as much as $50,000 (direct costs only), for a maximum duration of one year. The major objective of this program is to provide support to test innovative quality improvement strategies in the LSU Health System and partner hospitals at transitioning sites. These projects may involve the analysis of existing clinical data residing in LSU administrative databases, or collecting new data from patients within the LSU Health System or at partner hospitals. The ultimate aim of all projects must be to improve clinical outcomes and/or cost effectiveness. Awarded pilot projects will have access to services from all LSU ICON Cores to conduct their project.

Clinical and translational research faculty and trainees at the LSU and Tulane Health Sciences Centers (LSUHSC and TUHSC) and Pennington Biomedical Research Center (PBRC) now have a partner to assist in the development of innovative, investigator-initiated clinical trials. Dr. Shenoy serves as a resource for PIs from all three institutions to help enrich and facilitate the progress of clinical research protocols from conception to analysis and publication of data.

LA CaTS 2013 Spring Pilot Grants Funding Opportunity

The LA CaTS Center announced its 2013 Spring Pilot Grants Funding Opportunity in April, which 76 letters of Intent were received from all of the member institutions of the LA CaTS Center. Selected full proposals are due by June 3, 2013. The earliest possible start date of the projects is September 1, 2013.

Pennington Biomedical Research Center Study Finds Bedroom TV Viewing Increases Risk of Obesity in Children

BATON ROUGE, LA - A new research study from the Pennington Biomedical Research Center found that having a bedroom TV and TV viewing time were related to childhood obesity, and specifically high waist circumference. The study, entitled “Television, Adiposity, and Cardiometabolic Risk in Children and Adolescents,” was published today in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
