Scholars and Their Achievements

The Professional Development Core is highly invested in the success of all Scholars. In establishing an academic home for Scholars, we strongly believe that the tools provided for trainees will result in successful careers as clinical/translational scientists. Therefore, we meticulously track the attainment of each trainee’s career development goals and continue to do so after the award is completed. We are proud to share the successes of past and current Scholars below.

PBRC Roadmap (5th Cohort, Funding Period: 2016-2018)

Research Interest: Nutrition interventions during cancer treatments

  • Over the past year, Anne has secured over $80,000 in extramural grant funding as a PI.
  • Over the past 2 years, she has published 7 peer-reviewed manuscripts (journals included AM J Clin Nutr, Obesity, Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab)
  • Mentored a doctoral student and two medical students at Pennington and LSUHSC-NO.
  • Earned MSCR degree in May 2018

PBRC Meritorious (1st Cohort, Funding Period: 2013-2014) and Roadmap Scholar (4th Cohort, Funding Period: 2015-2017)
Research Interest: Childhood Obesity and Health Behavior
Over the past three years as a Scholars, Amanda has:
  • Secured $2 million in external grant funding as a PI/Co-PI
  • Published 18 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 10 of which she was first author (journals included Obesity, Pediatric Obesity, and Journal of Nutrition Education Behavior)
  • Promoted to Assistant Professor, Tenure Track July 2017
  • Honored at the LSU Ogden Honors College Graduation Ceremony- delivered the commencement speech, May 11, 2017
  • Earned Masters of Science in Clinical Research (MSCR) degree in May 2017
  • Conducted a TedXLSU Talk in November 2016 titled “The Serious Fun of Exergaming” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4ySv2CtBtU

Tulane University Roadmap (4th Cohort, Funding Period: 2015-2017)

Research Interest: Hemophilia and Anti-fibrinolytic Therapy
Over the past year, Maissaa has:

  • Secured $200,000 in extramural grant funding as a PI.
  • Selected as a Scholar for the Tulane University School of Medicine Scientist Pipeline Program
  • Presented her work in an oral presentation at the International Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis (ISTH) conference in Berlin, Germany, July 2017

Tulane University Roadmap (4th Cohort, Funding Period: 2015-2017)

Research Interest: Pulmonary Fibrosis and Anti-fibrotic Therapy
Over the past year, Shigeki has:

  • secured over $100,000 in extramural grant funding as a PI.
  • Awarded the Junior Physician Investigator Award, The American Federation for Medical Research (AFMR) 2017 and Junior Faculty Research Travel Award, The Southern Section-AFMR/Southern Society for Clinical Investigation (SSCI)
  • Earned MSCR degree in May 2016

LSUHSC Roadmap (4th Cohort, Funding Period: 2015-2017)

Research Interest: Chronic Alcohol Use and Critical Illness Myopathy, particularly following Acute Lung Injury
Over the past year, Sarah has:

  • Secured $200,000 in extramural grant funding as a Site PI.
  • Mentored 3 NIH T-32 funded medical students and 3 Pulmonary Critical Care in Medicine Fellows.
  • Earned MSCR degree in May 2017
  • Secured a K23 award from NIAAA for project titled "Prevalence of ICU-Acquired Myopathy in patients with Alcohol Use Disorders"

LSUHSC Roadmap Scholar

(1st Cohort, Funding Period: 2012-2014)

  • In 2016, Jennifer has secured $290,000 in two extramural grants as a PI/Co-PI.

(2nd Cohort, Funding Period: 2013-2015)

  • In August 2018, Courtney's research was highlighted by the NIH, on her study focused on intermittent fasting and the correlation with improvement in health. See the highlighted article here
  • In 2016, Courtney was selected as one of the University of Alabama- Birmingham (UAB) CCTS Mentored Career Development Program (KL2) awardees.

LSUHSC Roadmap Scholar

(2nd Cohort, Funding Period: 2013-2015)

  • In the last two years, Matthew has secured $170,000 in extramural grants as a PI.
  • In 2017, Matthew has published 3 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 2 of which he is the corresponding author and 1 as first author.
  • Promoted to Associate Professor in 2017.
