Dr. Carrie ElksCongratulations to Dr. Carrie Elks, Assistant Professor of Research in Matrix Biology at Pennington Biomedical Research Center, for receiving a $1.4 million NIDDK grant to explore fat cell communication and insulin resistance.

Dr. Elks is a past LA CaTS Center Visiting Scholar Awardee. She received funds to travel to The University of Mississippi Medical Center to learn the 3-D spheroid culture process from beginning to end. The 3D spheroid technique allowed her to culture human adipose-tissue derived stem cells from study participants and examine the molecular mechanisms responsible for any cellular changes seen in response to clinical interventions. On behalf of the entire center, we are proud to highlight Dr. Elk's accomplishments and look forward to her continued research success.
