    2nd Annual CCTS Translational Symposium

    Location: The Lodge at Gulf State Park, Gulf Shores, AL
    Registration & Details: https://www.uab.edu/ccts/news-events/training-symposium#registration
    More Information: The 2nd Annual CCTS Translational Training Symposium will take place in mid-November in Gulf Shores, AL, a location selected for its reasonable distance from a majority of Partners, not to mention proximity to the beach. With significant input by the Training Steering Committee and many across the Partner Network, the agenda will address topics related to grant writing, best practices in clinical research, community engagement and translational thinking. The meeting will also include several opportunities for networking as we continue to foster a community of scholars across the network.

    Recognizing an opportunity to enhance the training of clinical coordinators, a need emphasized by Drs. Higginbotham and Gillespie, the CCTS Training Symposium will include a session to provide critical highpoints in the conduct of clinical trials. This is meant to be an important overview of the key issues and considerations that could set the stage for how to leverage existing training programs or create new venues to go into deeper detail.

    American College of Sports Medicine Free Webinar: Navigating the World of Predatory Publishing

    Time: 12-12:30pm CST
    Registration: https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/4381964344667118083?source=Email
    Presenters: L. Bruce Gladden, PhD, FACSM, MSSE Editor-in-Chief; Jeffrey Pottegier, PhD. FACSM, Publications Committee Chair; Katie Feltman, Moderator
    Description: In the "publish or perish" environment where academics and researchers are under increasing pressure to publish their research to advance professionally, garner funding, achieve tenure or even retain employment, the increase in the volume of predatory journals has picked up rapidly over the last 5 years. The ability to mimic reputable journals, aggressively market such journals to targeted audiences, and publishing disruptors such as open access and electronic-only journals has made it increasingly difficult to distinguish between reputable and predatory journals. As this continues to be a rising problem in the research and academic communities, join ACSM in learning how to avoid the pitfalls of predatory journals.

    Learning Objectives:
    • Understand how the predatory publishing model came to exist and the impact on the publishing, academic and research fields;
    • Recognize the attributes that makes a journal predatory; learn the differentiating elements of a reputable journal and a predatory journal;
    • Discover the resources available to help recognize and avoid predatory journals;
    • Review a checklist of steps to take when you are ready to publish your work to assist in avoiding submission to a predatory journal.

    Mapping U.S. Obesity: Seeing the Big Picture

    The vast majority of research on the obesity epidemic has focused on individual-level factors and has relatively neglected how local factors matter. LSU sociologist Tim Slack presents findings from recent studies conducted with Pennington Biomedical colleagues on how obesity prevalence varies across the U.S. Their work shows that county-level obesity is geographically concentrated in regional clusters of significantly high and low rates of obesity. Their research shows that not only local factors like population composition and access to healthcare influence this reality, but these relationships systematically differ between regions suggesting that one-size-fits-all policies to combat obesity may miss the mark.

    Doors open at 5 p.m. for free food and networking, and the talk will start at 6 p.m. People of all ages are welcome, so please spread the word and join us for a fun and informative night!
