You’re enrolling minors into a clinical trial. Can you balance regulatory requirements with clear communication for both parent and child? How do you manage a worried parent? What does “NO” look like in an 8-year-old?

Step into a live, actor-driven scenario where every question, hesitation, and misunderstanding unfolds in real time—so you can practice getting it right when it matters most.

ACTion Learning uses local actors to illustrate real-life scenarios, where you serve as the “director”, molding the scene. No role-play is involved, so you can experience the reactions and consequences in a stress-free learning environment. Theories and models become practical because they become personal.

This event is geared toward clinical research professionals of any level, trainees, and PIs - anyone who might conduct the consent interview or interact with participants at any phase of the research process. This is a great companion for those attending any of the CITP or RTP.

Learning Objectives:
Recognize and appropriately respond to dissent in minors, including verbal and nonverbal cues, and determine when a child’s “no” must override parental consent.

1. Effectively communicate study risks and limitations to minors and their parents, using age-appropriate language while setting clear expectations about the difference between research participation and therapeutic care.
2. Navigate challenging consent dynamics with parents, including managing unrealistic expectations and maintaining ethical boundaries when faced with pressure to enroll a hesitant child.
