Congratulations to Dr. Michael Hagensee, Professor in the Department of Medicine at LSU Health New Orleans, for obtaining a $1.5 million grant to eliminate barriers from cervical cancer prevention. Dr. Hagensee is an molecular epidemiologist with an interest in human papillomavirus (HPV) infections in woman living with HIV. His laboratory studies are focused on the increase in HPV-related cervical cancer in HIV+ women and the increase in oral cancer in HIV+ men and women. This grant shows collaboration across two of LA CaTS Center's institutions: LSU Health New Orleans and LSU Health Shreveport.
Dr. Hagensee has received a multi-institutional pilot grant award for his project titled "Cervical Cancer Prevention in Louisiana". His initial studies on HPV are the basis for the current FDA-approved HPV vaccines. More recently, he has used the Health Beliefs Model to develop culturally relevant education materials to educate about HPV and the need for HPV vaccination to prevent cancer. In addition, Dr. Hagensee works closely with the LSU Health New Orleans School of Public Health to develop ways to improve HPV vaccination in Louisiana. On behalf of the entire center, we are proud to highlight Dr. Hagensee's award and look forward to his continued research success.
