Donna Ryan Named Executive Director of LSU's Pennington Biomedical Research Center

BATON ROUGE - LSU President F. King Alexander has announced that Dr. Donna Ryan, a world-renowned obesity researcher and professor emerita at Pennington Biomedical, will serve as interim executive director of LSU's Pennington Biomedical Research Center. Current Executive Director Dr. William Cefalu was recently named chief scientific and medical officer of the American Diabetes Association.

Baton Rouge, LA - LSU's Pennington Biomedical Research Center has been awarded $5.28 million from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study the benefits of exercise on health, specifically the molecular mechanisms behind these benefits. The Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity in Humans (MoTrPAC) program aims to understand the molecular mechanisms of how physical activity improves health and prevents disease.

The Research Action for Health Network (REACHnet) became a formal partner of LA CaTS in 2016. Since 2013, REACHnet has been a PCORI-funded clinical data research network (CDRN) that is designed to help Louisiana clinicians and researchers conduct robust comparative effectiveness research with integrated recruitment and data solutions. REACHnet is managed by the Louisiana Public Health Institute (LPHI) and includes the following partner systems:

Pennington Biomedical COBRE Announces Call for Pilot Grants

Funds are available to fund 4 to 8 P&F grants from the Pennington COBRE. Clinical/translational or basic science proposals may request budgets from $25,000 to $75,000, although it should be noted that budget requests near the upper limit are most likely to be approved for clinical projects. The major objective of this program is to provide research support to test innovative hypotheses regarding metabolic diseases and other pilot studies related to the COBRE and Clinical Science Faculty at PBRC, as well as their collaborators and PIs at sister institutions within the LSU system. The COBRE will give its highest priority to research related to obesity and diabetes, including excellent projects that relate to this global theme through nutritional interventions or preventive medicine approaches.

New LA CaTS Center Community Scholar Program Released

The Louisiana Clinical and Translational Science (LA CaTS) Center Community Engagement and Outreach Core (CEO Core) Core are accepting applications for LA CATS Community Scholars Program (LaCoSP) [Cohort 1] through March 4, 2016. An information conference call will be held on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 and Letters of Intent are due by February 5, 2016. The program provides formal training and pilot project funds for teams comprised of a community and an academic partner interested in community-based participatory research (CBPR). Courtney Peterson, PhD, MSC, is assistant professor in the Pennington Biomedical Research Center's Skeletal Muscle Physiology Laboratory. She is one of four CCTS Mentored Career Development Program (KL2) awardees for 2016. Peterson said she learned about the award opportunity from her center's director, Dr. William Cefalu. Prior to applying for the K award, Peterson had participated in a CCTS Panel for an NIH-funded K award application.

LSU Receives $18.5 Million NIH Grant to Build Biomedical Research Pipeline

BATON ROUGE - LSU has received an $18.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, or NIH, to support an Institutional Development Award, or IDeA, Network of Biomedical Research Excellence, or INBRE. The IDeA program builds research capacities in states that historically have had low levels of NIH funding by supporting basic, clinical and translational research; faculty development; and infrastructure improvements. IDeA is administered by NIH’s National Institute of General Medical Sciences and is a component of its Center for Research Capacity Building.

BATON ROUGE, LA - Four biomedical scientists from New Orleans and Baton Rouge were recently honored by the Louisiana Clinical and Translational Science (LA CaTS) Center, a statewide initiative funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). These "scholar" awards recognize early career clinical and translational research scientists for their work, and provide them with valuable support and mentoring to further develop their careers.
