Tulane's Drury Receives NIH Award to Standardize Research in Genetic Aging

Congratulations to Tulane University neuroscientist, Dr. Stacy Drury, on receiving a $2.9 million grant from NIH to lead a research network to standardize part of a chromosome related to genetic aging.

The LA CaTS Center welcomes Leanne M. Redman, MD, PhD as the new Professional Development Core Co-Director and lead for Pennington Biomedical Research Center. Dr. Redman is replacing Dr. Phil Brantley, who has been the professional development lead for Pennington Biomedical since 2012. She will co-direct the Professional Development Core along with Vivian Fonseca, MD (Tulane University, lead) and Paula Gregory, PhD (LSUHSC-New Orleans). Save the Date for the next LA CaTS Webcast on Thursday, October 31st at 2:30pm. Dr. Peter Katzmarzyk, Co-Director of the LA CaTS Pilot Grants Program will present "Pilot Grants Program Funding Opportunities". Dr. Katzmarzyk will give an overview of the present and upcoming funding opportunities and helpful tips for those wanting to apply. Specifically, this will cover information on the Visiting Scholar and Grant Development Programs, and the next Pilot Grant Opportunity (2020-Round 9) planned to be released in November 2019. This is an interactive presentation and attendees will be able to engage and ask questions during the webcast.

Candida Rebello, PhD, Post-doctoral Researcher at Pennington Biomedical Research Center, recently published an article in the journal Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, est. audience 6.1 million. Dr. Rebello was awarded a LA CaTS Pilot Award in 2018 funded by Pennington Biomedical titled "Clinical Safety and Pharmacokinetic Evaluation of Naringenin: Single Dose Escalation Randomized Double Blind Controlled Trial".

Please save the date for the LA CaTS Clinical Research Coordinators Level 1 Training, which will be held on Friday, October 11, 2019 at Tulane University (1440 Canal Street, Room 1208). Registration will start at 7:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast, and the training will begin at 8 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. Lunch will be provided and all participants will receive an LA CaTS Level 1 Research Coordinator Training Certificate, upon completion. The session is free and open to all LA CaTS institutions.

The 2019 Southeast Regional IDeA Conference is scheduled for November 6-8, 2019 in Louisville, Kentucky at the Galt House Hotel. We encourage you to attend, especially those investigators that have received funding and training awards from the LA CaTS Center. It is a great conference to showcase your project! The conference will include various workshops, oral and poster presentation sessions from COBRE, INBRE and IDeA-CTR programs in the southeast region, as well as presentations from NIGMS Program Officials.

Each year the Professional Development Core selects qualified Scholars into the program. The Roadmap Scholars are junior faculty members whose goals are to become sustainable independent researchers. This year, in addition to a submitted application, Scholars were interviewed by all three Co-Directors and the Research Navigator. Educating Through Entertainment: Prostate Cancer Crisis in African Americans, a Stage Play, June 29th

Considering that June is Men's Health Month, the Prostate Health Education Network (PHEN) is bringing to New Orleans "Daddy's Boys," an educational stage play on June 29th, 6:00-10:00 PM at Southern University (SUNO). The play is a drama-comedy purposed to increase education and awareness about the prostate cancer crisis in the African American community.

Dr. Stephanie Broyles, Director of Pennington Biomedical's Contextual Risk Factors Laboratory and LA CaTS Center Community Engagement Co-Director, is the primary investigator of the Louisiana portion of the RURAL study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Researchers from LSU's Pennington Biomedical Research Center and other institutions will study why some people in rural parishes and counties live longer, healthier lives. Cenla Broadcasting, KPEL and KSYL, all in Alexandria, aired the story.

Dr. Leanne Redman, Director of Reproductive Endocrinology and Women’s Health at Pennington Biomedical Research Center, was awarded a $2.9 million grant from NIH’s National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) to test a new program called “Healthy Beginnings” in partnership with the Louisiana Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. Professional Development Offers a K-Grant Writing Panel

The LA CaTS Professional Development Core is hosting a K-Grant application writing panel on Tuesday, May 14, 3-4:30pm. The informal discussion will be held at LSUHSC-NO in the 6th Floor Conference Room of the Clinical Sciences Research Building (CSRB), 533 Bolivar St. This discussion is open to any interested junior faculty.
